It is very rare to find someone who can be both grumpy and charming but Martin was entirely capable of this complexity. His ability to deliver swift assessment was a skill that made his work so helpful and a conversation with him, so rewarding. On many issues, he and I came from different directions but arrived at the same conclusion and I will sorely miss debating the world's problems with him.
